This week’s post is by Gabriel Moshenska. I think the idea of crowdfunding archaeology is very exciting. I mentioned last week the Gertrude Bell film Letters from Baghdad being put together by Sabine Krayenbühl, Zeva Oelbaum et al and funded by Kickstarter donations, and I think we’re going to see many more such projects. It’s going to mean a lot more public involvement in archaeology, which has to be a good thing, and hopefully it will mean the projects that don’t get funded by the, increasingly squeezed, public and private grant giving bodies will manage to go ahead. I can also see disadvantages too, what gets funded is going to depend on the whim of the general public, and who knows where that might lead. But, until we’ve tried it we won’t know and I think this could be a brilliant way forward for archaeology. Anyway, enough of me, over…
